Breast Vs Bottle Key Nutrients Explained

Key Nutrients Explained

Nucleotides explained - For growth and immunity
Once you understand what nucleotides do, it’s easy to see why they’re so important for your baby.  Nucleotides play a vital role in helping the body create new cells - and because your baby grows faster in their first two years than at any other time in their life, a good supply of nucleotides is important.  Nature provides babies with nucleotides through breast milk. And if you’re bottle-feeding your baby, you can make sure they gets the nucleotides they need by choosing Farley’s First Milk or Farley’s Second Milk.  We’ve added nucleotides to both these milks, at similar levels to breast milk because research has shown just how real the benefits of these nutrients are for babies. Among them, improved growth and enhanced immune system with a reduction of the risk and severity of upset tummies.

All about LCPs
Long Chain Polyunsaturates (LCPs) are special types of fat, important for the development of your baby’s brain, eyes and nervous system.  The most important of these is an omega-3 LCP known as DHA.

Adults and children make their own LCPs from the food they eat, but babies need extra help in their first four to six months, which is why nature provides LCPs through breast milk. Mums can actually boost the amount of LCPs in their breast milk by eating more foods that are naturally rich in LCPs and other omega-3 fats, such as oily fish, or by including foods that have been supplemented with omega-3 fats (for more information visit www.DHA-in-mind.com)

LCPs for bottle-fed babies
Bottle-fed babies need not miss out on LCPs because, inspired by breast milk, Farley’s milks contain a unique blend of LCPs, which are from natural food sources Farley’s First Milk and Farley’s Second Milk contain at least 30% more LCPs than any other infant formula and a higher level of omega-3 DHA. What’s more, the LCPs in Farley’s are in an easily digestible form, making the balance of fats in Farley’s baby milks well tolerated.

The right minerals and vitamins are vital for healthy growth and development. Farley’s milks contain a blend of vitamins and minerals that meet your baby’s needs, both in their earliest days and as they grow.

Minerals
All Farley’s milks contain important minerals:

  • Calcium - for healthy bones, teeth and nerves.
  • Copper - important for the body’s metabolic processes and for healthy red blood cells
  • Iodine - vital for normal metabolic function
  • Iron - for healthy red blood cells and carrying oxygen round the body
  • Magnesium - for the healthy development of the skeleton and soft tissues
  • Phosphorous - to help form supporting tissues
  • Potassium and Sodium - these two work together to regulate fluids in the body
  • Selenium - an important anti oxidant which helps to protect cells
  • Zinc - works with vitamin C and beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A) to help the immune system
These minerals are also found naturally in breast milk and in different foods.

Vitamins
Just as you need vitamins to keep you healthy, so your baby needs vitamins to grow and develop healthily. All Farley’s milks contain a wide range of key vitamins:

  • Vitamin A - for healthy skin and eyesight. Beta-carotene is another form which can help the immune system
  • B Vitamins - help convert food to energy. Also important for the proper formation of red blood
  • Vitamin C - helps your baby absorb iron
  • Vitamin D - helps calcium to be absorbed from the diet and to be used in bone formation.
  • Vitamin E - needed for the protection, formation and maintenance of body cells
  • Vitamin K - helps clot the blood

The importance of iron
Your baby is born with a store of iron that lasts about six months. After this, they need to start getting iron from food, such as meat, green leafy vegetables and fortified cereals, and from drinks such as milk.

Iron is vital to your baby’s well-being, essential for healthy blood, growth and development. In fact, because they are growing so fast, they need more iron as a baby and toddler than at any other time in their life, so it is very important that your baby's food and drink provide an adequate supply of Iron.

All Farley's milks contain iron and Farley's Follow-On Milk contains extra iron to help meet your baby's growing needs from 6 months right through to 2 years and beyond. In fact, a pint of Farley's Follow-On Milk provides around 87% of the daily requirement for a 7 - 12 month old baby, which they may not receive from solid food alone.
