Involving other siblings

Mobile of toysOlder siblings have it tough. One minute they feel the centre of your world, next minute your newborn comes along and hogs the limelight. It’s no surprise that older brothers and sisters can feel jealous of the new arrival. And the fact that a newborn can’t play with them just yet doesn’t help. But by the time your baby reaches 7 months, they will be able to play and interact much more with their older brothers and sisters. Making sure your older children get involved with baby helps them to form that lifelong bond and chances are, they’ll love to have a new playmate around.

Playing
Some children love to play with babies, and babies are often fascinated and delighted with their older siblings’ antics. But bear in mind their games and toys may not always be suitable for younger babies, so supervise playtime to make sure it doesn’t end in tears.

Caring
Your elder child may not be able to change a nappy, but they can help fetch the necessary equipment. They’re not old enough to bathe baby, but they could help you hold the towel and play with baby in the bath. There are so many ways your child can help and they’ll love to feel useful.

Advising
A great way to help your toddler feel involved is by asking for their advice: which dress would baby like to wear? Shall I give baby a piece of banana or a rusk? Just make sure you’re happy with whatever advice you get.
